Welcome To NIE

The Brownsville Herald's Newspaper In Education (NIE) program provides newspapers, instructional materials, and a variety of
programs and services to assist teachers in their classrooms.

Every day of the week, The Herald provides a fresh textbook for teachers and students.
Studies have shown that using the newspaper in the classroom will help students:

  • Improve reading and writing skills with feature articles, entertainment reviews, and the comics.
  • Build vocabulary with crossword puzzles and word games.
  • Cultivate critical thinking skills through The Herald's coverage of local, national, and
    international news.
  • Clarify values and develop real-life decision making skills through human interest stories and
    advice columns.
  • Sharpen math and problem-solving abilities with sports statistics, stock market listings, weather forecasts, and retail ads.
  • Broaden their perspective with political cartoons, opinion columns, and editorials.
  • Apply lifeskills through classified ads, business and consumer news, and recipes.
