Tips for Using the Newspaper |
- Think ahead about the management of the class set of newspapers before they arrive. For example, make sure that the students have enough room to work with the newspapers. If your classes will be using the same set of papers throughout the school day, stress that each student leave the newspaper sections in correct order for the next class's use.
- Introduce the format of the newspaper at the beginning of your newspaper work. Explain page numbering, sections, and the index. Talk about different parts, kinds of articles, and any information that will help the students with their work throughout the newspaper. If you are working with young students, consider stapling the left edge of the newspaper to keep it together (like a book) until the students become familiar with the layout.
- If more than one class will be sharing a set of newspapers, have each student write his name on his newspaper. Students will be more inclined to neatly fold their newspaper when they are done with it if they know you can track who used it.
- Keep hands clean by keeping a canister of pre-moistened towelettes nearby.
- Stretch the newspaper by using only one section at a time. Separate the sections before class starts. Other sections can be saved for another day or shared with other teachers.
- Allow free reading time each newspaper day. As you give students time to satisfy their curiosity about what is in the newspaper, you will also have time to survey the headlines and topics. Plan time for students to share items they find interesting.
- Sneak in a quick, simple fraction lesson by having students fold their newspaper in half, thirds, fourths, etc.
- Send newspapers home with your students when you are finished with them. For many homes, it is the only newspaper received. If you do not send them home, use your classroom setting as a model for recycling.
